ZC JoAnn Patton introduced our District Governor (and her son) Brian Patton. DG Patton reported on the International Convention and some of the goals that were set for Lions around the world. During his tenure as DG, he vows to try to meet these goals in his District. There is the ever present goal of increasing membership. He suggests that each Lion ask his spouse to join. He would like to have a 24 member increase in the District before he leaves office. Finally, he would like to have one more Club chartered in the MD. Brian's goals are not unattainable and he called upon our Club for assistance. We, as Hoquiam Lions, will help as best we can. |

Other than a few announcements, there was no business to conduct after opening the meeting. King Lion Ken reminded us that our MARCH 9 meeting will be held at the new Immanuel Baptist Church in North Hoquiam. He would like to see a good turn-out to honor the Herculean effort by the Church's congregation in getting this facility built.....Lion Secty Jerry announced the final date of the Charter Party. March 25, 2010 - Hoquiam Elks - Social hour 5:30 to 6:30 PM The menu is pork roast with all of the trimmins' and salad bar. The price is $18 per plate (gratuity included) [Note: It was decided to give the Elks kitchen one more chance to correct mediocre meals we have had recently.] Having nothing further to report, the meeting was turned over to Lion David Irwin, today's program chairman.
David introduced Liz Anderson, Community and Government Relations Director for
the PUD, as our speaker for today. Liz' topic for today was the Energy
Independence Act (I-937) enacted by the State Legislature.
I-193 requires all utilities - regardless of their need - with 25,00 or more customers must comply and develop new, expensive renewable resources (hydro-electricity not considered renewable), or purchase renewable energy credits. To meet these mandates, our PUD is studying several renewable energy options including Wind, Solar, and Tidal being the preferred three.
Our PUD is currently receiving 70% of it's power needs from Bonneville Power Administration with the balance from other hydro-electric generating plants within our State. Currently, from all sources, they are paying $30 per mega-watt hour. If they opt for wind energy, the cost would increase to $75-100 per megawatt hour. Solar power would cost approximately $200 per megawatt hour.
To comply with the Act will place a enormous financial burden on our already "strapped" economy. Therefore, the PUD Commissioners have drafted a resolution supporting the amendment to the Energy Independence Act. The resolution addresses our bleak economy, un-employment at records levels, and the fact that we do not need more energy at this time.
With very knowledgeable answers to many questions, Liz concluded her very informative presentation.
Jerry McFeely's name was drawn for the attendance pot. (where's the justice)

Today was our monthly business meeting and surprisingly, there was a fair turnout. Lion Paul Prichard started a sign-up list for our March 9 Noon meeting at Immanuel Baptist Church, as we need to have a fairly close "head count". ( we could have a "foot count" however we would have to divide by 2 ) Spouses and guest are invited and urged to attend.
There were several items discussed today. 1) Newspaper drop. - It's been a constant battle with the fellow in Elma who supplies the newsprint recycling container, to get him to pick it up. Further, he hasn't paid us a dime for many, many months. We discussed getting rid of the container altogether and perhaps doing something with Aberdeen Lions regarding newsprint recycle. 2) Fireworks Stand - Income from fireworks sales has dropped off considerably of late. The rotten economy undoubtedly is one of the reasons, however the fireworks supplier has raised prices as well. We discussed changing suppliers or perhaps not having a fireworks stand in the future. The Board of Directors will address these issues and report to the Club soon.
With no other business - save "monkey business" - the meeting was concluded. Lion Roger Smith's name was drawn for the attendance pot...
