January 8, 2008

Our first meeting in the year 2008 was extremely well attended. Let's hope that this is a preview of meetings to follow this year.   As this was the day that we awarded the Rain Derby prizes, King Lion Paul turned the meeting over to our beloved Rain Derby chairman Roger Smith who presided over the festivities. Roger asked each of the winners how they arrived at the winning guesses. (hoping to pick up some pointers)  Each refused to answer fearing that others may discover their strategy.

One winner - Alyson Giola - couldn't be here in person so she authorized her father -Roger Smith-  to collect her winnings. Roger, fearing temptation, presented the winnings to his wife Sharon to insure that they  were properly disbursed.  A few years back, Alyson visited our Club and without a doubt learned something about rain prediction.                                                                                     (click on the picture to enlarge)

The winners who were present were rewarded with the appropriate number of new gold dollars. The winner's - $1000 Pot-O-Gold - weighed 21 pounds, the runners-up- $200 Pints-O-Gold - weighed in at a measly 4 pounds.

This concluded one of the best meetings that we have had for a long time.

January 15, 2008

King Lion Paul gaveled a fairly well attended meeting to order. Our musical opening had a lot to be desired, however as the old saying goes, "Halitosis is better than no breath at all."

The only business on the agenda were several announcements. Joann Frazer reported that Lion Helge is at Pacific Care in Aberdeen - Room 10. She recommended that he have no visitors until he has a chance to rest and recuperate from his bout with pneumonia.......Joan Smiley reported that Lion Bob seems to be getting a little stronger each day but still has a long way to go......Paul announced the Zone Meeting at Ocean Shores on Jan 17 also our Club's Board Meeting January 24 @ Noon at the Hoquiam Elks. Lion Jerry Schaefer will provide pizza......Lion Larry Jones announced that we will be cooking crab at Mike Lytle's seafood store on January 26 at 10:00 AM. All available help requested.

Our speaker today was Captain Dave Everitt from the Hoquiam Fire Department. The topic of his presentation today was the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).

Our Club recently made a donation to purchase an AED for the Hoquiam High School and the HFD assisted with the actual purchase of the machine. Capt Everitt's presentation today was to explain the AED -  how and why it is used.

This writer was asked, nay drafted (thinking that I would get wired up and zapped) to come forward and witness the demonstration. I must say that I was truly impressed with what this machine does and just how easy it appears to use. If a situation arises that the machine is needed, the operator simply attaches the leads (adhesive patches) to the victim at points clearly indicated on the leads. After assuring that the victim's airway is clear, simply press the start button and follow the audio (and redundant visual) instructions. To my mind the most difficult instruction to follow - and it's repeated several times during the course of treatment - is stay calm. The only prerequisite to be qualified to use the AED is to have a current CPR card.

Capt Dave's presentation was a very thorough explanation of the life-saving benefits of early intervention in cardiac related distress.

January 29, 2008

King Lion Paul called our pesky bunch to order (as close to order as our fun-loving members allow). There were several announcements and reports.

Larry Jones reported that 66 Lions and their guests enjoyed an evening of good food and camaraderie at our Crustacean Cuisine outing Saturday. Further, the Club "covered the spread" with regard to expenses. Larry thanked the Lions who braved the elements to show up for the "cooking party" Saturday morning at Lion Mike Lytle's seafood shop. The crew included: Jack Strom, Mike Lytle, Jack Shrauger, Chris Eide and son Ryan, Al Bruun, Jerry Schaefer and his friend Ken Kalles, Pete Hegg, and Ed Rosi.

The tune of the contest period - Colonel Bogie March (or Bridge on the River Kwai) - was correctly named by 6 Hoquiam Lions and our honorary Lion, Russ Hansen from Morris, PA. The winner was Joan Smiley.

Lion Secty Jerry announced the Club Charter Night Party will be held on February 29, 2008 at the Aberdeen Elks Club. Social hour at 5:30 PM with dinner to follow at 6:30 PM. The cost is $19 per person.  Jerry promises that we will have

"dyn-o-mite" entertainment. Mark your calendars and plan to attend.

At the direction of Lions International, King Lion Paul presented Lion Seppo Tuominen a Key Member award for bringing in two new members. The rest of us need to follow Seppo's lead!!

Program - As Lion Pete Vanderlinden's program was tardy, Pete filled some time by talking about the mortuary business.

Our speaker finally showed up and Pete introduced Damien Beverly, Youth Director for the local Salvation Army.

Damien gave us a short personal biography and - due time restraints - an equally abbreviated explanation of his duties at the Salvation Army.

The short (and I am certain not the most informative) version of Damien's duties is to attend to the needs of the youth in our community. Being relatively new on the job, he is making an attempt to identify these kids and evaluate their needs. Determining this will dictate how best to inspire and to lead them. Sadly time was not on our side and he had to curtail further remarks. We WILL have him back at a future time.

Lion Pete Hegg won the attendance pot much to the chagrin of another Lion who was certain the name after Pete in the capsule was Vanderlinden.
