Happy New Year
January 5, 2010

Lion Omar Parker
Passed 12/31/09
Our first meeting of the new year - 2010 - started on a sad note as we bade farewell to a fellow Lion and extraordinary friend. As Lions members, we will steadfastly attempt to fulfill Omar's legacy of "Community Service"

The second order of business for today was the recognizing and honoring the January birthday Lions. They are : Jerry Schaefer, George Powers, and Basil Sandstrom.
Our annual Crab Feed will be held on January 22 at the American Legion Hall in Aberdeen. As is normal, members will be asked to bring a pot luck dish. (preferably with food in the dish.) A crab cookin' work party is tentatively scheduled for 10:00 AM the morning of the 22nd at Mike Lytle's seafood store. Be sure that you get signed up!
The Main Event - Today was the day we gave the money away. (sounds like a session of Congress) Of course this refers to awarding the 2009 Rain Derby prize money. In attendance to receive their prize were: Jerry Schaefer - $1000 prize winner, Mark Pittsley - $200 prize winner. The three other runners-up for a $200 prize - Sidney Dudley, Steinar Goheen, and George Donovan - were unable to attend. This was the second runner-up prize that Sidney has won and it was reported (by King Lion Ken) that she didn't come this time as our singing is terrible J Of course this is not true. Steinar Goheen was unable to attend as he had a mid-term exam this day. (First grade reading test) [George Donovan informed the Club that he is donating his winnings back to us.] We each should make an individual effort to thank George.

Having no carry-over business to conclude, after opening the meeting King Lion Ken called for announcements.
Lion Pete Hegg reminded us of the upcoming Crab Feed .(date, time, and place announced in last newsletter) He didn't have the final price, however he assured us that it would be "cheap" (I sure hope that means inexpensive) Having no further announcements we moved to the business of the day.

Our program for today was presented by Lion Ray Pumphrey (Hoquiam Fire Chief) and Lion Paul Dean (Asst. Fire Chief). Their presentation today pertained to the upcoming EMS levy that Hoquiam will have on the ballot. They stressed that this levy is just the continuance of the current levy that is to expire after 6 years.
They gave a very thorough accounting of how the levy funds will be allocated and the necessity for the levy. Emergency responses - fire and medical - are continually increasing making the passage of this levy very important.
As always Ray and Paul were the recipients of the patented Hoquiam Lions Club good-natured ribbing, however it didn't interfere with their very professional presentation this day.
The attendance pot was won by Lion Dr. Paul Prichard.

( Lions Al Bruun and Ken Johnson reporting)
The meeting was called to order by Pres., Ken Johnson. Eighteen members in attendance.
Lion Pete Hegg gave a brief report on the upcoming crab feed. He said that we need a few members to help with the crab cooking detail out at Lytle’s Seafood shop on Friday. Be there by 10:00am if you can help. A sign-up list for the crab feed was passed around the room......We received a request for eye-glasses from a HHS student, signed by the school nurse. The request was unanimously approved.....Jerry Erickson reported that we have received our renewal contract from the D.O.T. for highway litter cleanup on the Lonngren Pass road. A motion was made, seconded and passed to sign the contract extension.....President Ken reported that next week’s meeting will be our regular monthly business meeting, but will have a short program regarding the Hoquiam School levy.
Lion Paul Dean introduced the program, Hoquiam Mayor, Jack Durney. Mr. Durney
expounded about changes and
improvements around the town . . . such as the new sidewalks downtown, the
Tattoo Parlor, the Sasquatch Wing restaurant, the 8th Street Ale
House, the new clothing store (where 7th St. Sweetshop used to be),
the LaVogue’s remodel and the Art Guild Building. He talked about the push to
get some of our older buildings qualified as Historical Structures. He said
that the Pontoon project is still alive, and could come to Hoquiam if the ‘Green
People’ don’t kill it. Mr. Durney said that there are false rumors floating
around that the City is going to sponsor a contest where entrants can guess
which year the new Rite-Aid Store will open. He would only promise that it
would happen during our lifetimes (maybe). Jack also discussed the sewage
lagoon project. Nothing new there.
Larry Jones was drawn for the huge attendance pot. He was not in attendance, thus lost a rather generous sum.
