June's bustin' out all over - all over the puddles and the squalls. Yep, it sure looks like we have another year of "bundling up" when selling fireworks. We held our meeting today in the Elks bar to have access to the big screen TV and VCR. Let me say - without fear of contradiction - our musical opening ceremony, in the enclosed area of the bar, was not good. We did show a little improvement with the Happy Birthday song for the June birthday Lions: Greg Grun, Helge Erickson, Rick Thomas, Paul Dean, and Joan Smiley.

Announcements and Reports: Jerry Schaefer that he and Nola, Pete and Sally Hegg represented our Club at the Aberdeen  Lions installation this week. He reports that a good time was had by all..........Ken Johnson reminded the Club that we have the responsibility to "man" the gates at the stadium on Loggers' Playday. He suggested that we arrange for high school students to give us a hand as they do at the Salmon dinner. He then extended an invitation to all, to join he and Marlene at an open house on June 29 at the Elks from 1-4 PM. The occasion being the Johnson's 50th wedding anniversary. ( It's hard to imagine what Marlene has tolerated, lo these many years.)

Program:  About 8-9 years ago, for a program, we had a young lady - Melanie Kosoff - give us a demonstration of weight-lifting. At that time she hadn't been involved in competitive lifting for very long. We, at least this writer, had no information on her progress in the sport. We learned today that Melanie had married and has three children. Today, thanks to Larry Jones, we got next to the last chapter in Melanie Kosoff Roach's  career. Our program today was a film ( commercials edited out) of the entire Olympic weight-lifting trials a Denver, CO. ( One observer noted that when these young ladies made their lifts, about 50% of the Lions watching grunted with them.)  Melanie finished in first place and will represent the US in the upcoming Beijing Olympic games. [ editor's note: When Melanie brings home the Gold for the US, perhaps a visit to the Hoquiam Lions will be incorporated into every Olympic athlete's training schedule?]

The Pot 'O' Gold - Larry Jones was the winner. The amount he won will almost buy a gallon of gas for his motor home.

King Lion Paul, fresh from his trip to Bosnia, gaveled a fairly well attended meeting to order. In honor of his birthday this month, we serenaded and fined him in the appropriate fashion. There was some mention of interest accrual on the fine as he was not here last meeting. As his absence was of a noble nature, we waived the interest.

Ed Rosi arranged our speaker for today - Greg McHugh.  Greg is the owner of Ken Schoenfeld furniture in Hoquiam, and is the Chairman of the Downtown Hoquiam Business Association.

Greg's message today was one of allegiance to Hoquiam,  faith in Hoquiam, and most of all participation in the many ongoing projects intended to make Hoquiam the great City we all know it can be.

He explained, in detail, all of the efforts that the Hoquiam Business Association together with Hometown Hoquiam group are currently putting forth. Greg further mentioned a group of young professionals who are  "brainstorming" ideas to improve our City and perhaps improve the way we perceive change.

Greg's presentation was timely and well informed.

Attendance Pot - Dave Wayman's name was drawn. As Dave was not present, we have a carry-over pot for this writer to win when next we meet.

King Lion-elect Kogin substituting for King Lion Paul today. Having no visitors and no business - save passing the fireworks sign-up sheet around - we went directly to the program.

Lion Ed Rosi introduced our speaker for today - Bob Lippert. Bob is the Manager of Technical Operations, South Puget Sound-West, for Comcast Cable.

His message addressed the government mandated switch from analog to digital signal for TV that goes into effect February 17, 2009. He further explained the difference between the two signal transmission types and how (and why) the digital signal will be superior. For the consumer, the transition may be a little intimidating at first however it will provide for more (and faster) programming and information transfer.

Bob's presentation was very thorough, informative, and timely.

After answering several questions, he concluded his program and drew the attendance pot.

The name drawn for the attendance pot was - Montique J. Snarquaart. Monti was not present so we have a carry-over pot.

Newly elected King Lion's first meeting July1, 2008
