( Lion Ray Pumphrey reporting )
The meeting was called to order and the introductory singing and Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lion Paul Dean.
Committee Reports:
Concessions:
Lion Larry Jones reported that we received an additional $66 from Pepsi for concession sales. Lion Jack Strom reported that we have yet to receive a bill from Swanson’s.
Rain Derby:
Lion President Roger urged the members to get out and sell the remaining Rain Derby tickets, as everything we sell now is pure profit.
Signage:
Lion Chris Eide reported that the new sign has been installed on Sumner and looks great.
Lion President Roger gave a brief report on the recent Zone meeting.
Program:
Today’s program was a no show; however, Lions Rudy Spanich and Gerry Schaefer filled in very nicely. Rudy gave a very interesting account of when he left the Croatian island of Molat with his mother when he was 5 years old. They arrived at Ellis Island in 1928 and had to be quarantined for two weeks there because he had the measles. They then took a train all the way to Hoquiam where they were met by his father who owned a house on the Karr Ave. He further told us of his early days growing up in Hoquiam and the challenges he faced and successfully overcame. Gerry then read us the very sobering obituary of “Common Sense.” A sad but true account of the gradual failing and end of “Common Sense” as we once knew it.
The Pot: Try as he might, Lion Rudy was unable to pull his own name from the pot, but he did select Jack Strom, who was present and willing to accept the prize.

King Lion Roger was missing today so the meeting was conducted by our capable 1st VP Jerry McFeely. The attendance today was lousy, however, according to Jerry, the good singers showed up. (Talk about your "Tin Ears")
We had two visitors from the Longview Pioneer Lions Club - Bob and Pat Reistoffer. They are vacationing at Ocean Shores and decided to visit us for some good food and Lions camaraderie. Too bad that we had such a poor turnout today. (As for the good food...eh?)

Program: Having no business, we continued to the program speaker of the day. Lion Pete VanderLinden introduced Tom Hartwig. Tom - the current Exalted Ruler of the Hoquiam Elks #1082 - is a retired Boeing employee - and test pilot - who has moved to our fair City and has be come active in several civic projects.
His presentation today was a trip down memory lane with regard to many Boeing aircraft. He had several stories pertaining to the development, manufacturing, and final delivery of Boeing airplanes.
He then gave a very detailed account of the new 787 Dreamliner. This aircraft is made from composite materials and not metal which made his explanation even more interesting.
He concluded his presentation by thanking the Club and drawing the attendance pot.

King Lion Roger's name was drawn. Oops.
October 25, 2011
Upon hearing that his name was called for last week's attendance pot, King Lion Roger was back today. It seems that he brought the errant pride members with him as attendance was great. The first order of business was to serenade (and fine) an overlooked Lion's birthday. Pete VanderLinden was 91 years of age this month.
Announcements: Lion Treasurer Jack says that Pepsi-Cola still hasn't billed us for some of their product that we used on Loggers' Playday which makes a final accounting impossible. It was recommended that we send them a nice letter and thank them for their donation....Roger gave a last ditch plea for us to sell Rain Derby tickets as the sales period is fast coming to an end. He further stated that the "Stub Sorting" party will be in mid-November (venue to be announced)

Program: Having no further business, Roger introduced our program for today - Karen Keogh. Karen is the Director of the Grays Harbor / Pacific / Thurston counties Senior Companion Program (SCP)
SCP is sponsored, supported, and administered by the YMCA of Grays Harbor and has one full-time employee - Karen. She has a volunteer Assistant, Barbara Plemmons. The program is comprised of healthy adults 55 years or older who are willing to donate a portion of their time to helping folks less fortunate than themselves. The volunteers are given training and are reimbursed for their out-of-pocket expenses, such as travel coverage.
The program is directed to adults, 18 yrs and older, who have special needs and are willing to have a person come to their home, or place of residence. and give them help. Help could be just as simple as monthly bill paying, doing a few chore around the house, a walk, or just companionship. Reading a book to a shut-in who is visually impaired makes a world of difference in that persons life. Simply put, the Senior Companion Program is, "A friend giving a helping hand to a friend"
The POT: Ed Wayman's name was drawn for the huge amount. As Ed was not in attendance, the pot continues to grow. (3 meeting carryover so far)
