Club Projects

*************************************

Our main "fund raising" projects are :

Rain Derby : Tickets are sold to the public for guesses predicting the annual rainfall in Hoquiam. Prizes totaling $1800, are awarded to winners. If a person guesses the EXACT Annual AND December rainfall, an additional $4000 bonus will be added to the $1000 top prize for a total of $5000. This fund raiser has been an annual Lions event for  62 years.

Fireworks sales : The Club operates a stand for selling fireworks to the public during the week of July 4th. The stand is staffed by Lions members 11 hours each day.

Salmon Barbeque : Each September in the City of Hoquiam, there is a one day celebration called Loggers Playday. It's Hoquiam's biggest day of the year. Club members cook and sell 500-600 barbequed salmon dinners to the public this day.

Logger's Playday Concession Stand : The Club operates a sandwich and refreshment stand during the actual Logger's Show. 5000+ attend this show where contests of logging skills are held.

News Print recycling : The Club has a paper "drop" for newspapers, magazines, etc. ...this is a double plus...not only does it provide revenue for the Club, further, it helps preserve our natural resource...TREES.

Service Activities :

Youth Program : We support a number of youth programs through the schools and local youth groups... Each month, at a regular meeting, we honor a high school senior boy and girl chosen for their scholastic and community activities achievements... Our Club awards 2 - $1000 scholarships each year to graduating seniors. (1 - Academic / 1 - Vocational).

Sight and Hearing Impaired : Together with our normal participation in Lions International sight and hearing projects , we further provide glasses and hearing aids for needy children and adults in our community.  In cooperation with the Hoquiam School District, we are planning to sponsor an annual screening clinic for youngsters - at certain grade levels - to test visual acuity and hearing prior to enrolling for the school year.

Highway clean-up : The Club participates in Washington State's "Adopt-a-Highway" program by keeping a two-mile section of highway free of litter.

Community Kids Christmas Party:  The Club donates to an annual Christmas Party for underprivileged children in our County.

Food Bank : We make a sizable donation to a local contest between high schools - Hoquiam Grizzlies and Aberdeen Bobcats - called Foodball. As Hoquiam and Aberdeen are contiguous, the sports rivalry is fierce.  Foodball is a continuance of this rivalry that produces a huge amount of food and cash to the local food banks.
